A thank you to those who turned up at Dulwich Hamlet FC to help sort Calais Aid donations

Last night around 50 volunteers turned up at Dulwich Hamlet Football Club to sort through the colossal amount of items that were donated to the Supporters’ Trust’s Calais refugee appeal.

The task was massive. Some piles of clothing were taller than the volunteers sorting them!

With an amazing amount of team work, items were sorted into piles, rebagged and labelled.

In all, we received over 40 tents, boxes and boxes of non-perishable food, sleeping bags, camping equipment, shoes, toiletries, and a huge amount of warm winter clothing. You name it, the people of Dulwich and surrounding areas delivered it!

On the night, Simon from Plan C took some of the larger tents and sleeping bags away as he is travelling to Calais this weekend so some of the donations are already getting to where they are needed as we speak.

Some of the items that were donated will be sent to Kos and the Middle East due to them being more in demand elsewhere.

Ruth Miller took women’s and children’s clothing to the Samara Appeal who will distribute them around refugee camps in the Middle East.

Sophie Powell took women’s sanitary items and children’s nappies to send out to Kos in Greece.

The small amount of items that were not suitable for the refugee camps were bagged and boxed up and Kiren Lall and board member David Rogers will be distributing them around local charity shops on Tuesday morning.

The Supporters’ Trust would like to thank every single person who turned up to help last night. Without them our task would have been impossible.

Our work is not yet complete. The donations now have to be transported from the football club to our storage in West Norwood which has kindly been supplied free of charge by Big Yellow. Big Yellow have now given us a second storage room!

We plan to do this on Saturday morning from 9am so are putting a further call out to volunteers to box, lift and carry donations. We are also appealing for help from anyone with a van who can come down and transport donations for us.image1

Unfortunately we are unable to take any more donations at the Football Club but if you want to contribute financially, you can do so on our Go Fund Me page.

Once again, a big thank you from Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust to all those that have helped make this happen. We could not have done it without you.
